Hekate’s Night: November 16th- A Ritual Intensive

Among the autumnal trees reaching toward the murky night sky, the candles of jack-o’-lanterns flicker out, and cold winds stalk the streets as the last trick-or-treaters return home. Halloween has passed, and November 1st has arrived. Yet for witches, another celebration is approaching: Hekate’s Night, November 16th. The Season of the Witch is only beginning!

Why is November 16th associated with Hekate? Does this date have any historical significance? Its origins are obscure, and its meaning is as varied as the Dead themselves. In this four-part Ritual Intensive, I explore the origins of Hekate’s Night in modern Paganism and witchcraft, examine its historical context, and explain why this observance makes sense within a broader understanding of ancient traditions surrounding Hekate and the Dead.

Part I: History and Origins

Explore the history of Hekate’s Night, the seasonal changes that shape this time of year, and how the ancient world observed them. This section examines festivals celebrated across the ancient Greco-Roman world, their historical context, and their influence on my personal practice. Cited sources are provided throughout.

Part II: The Fifteen Days of Hekate Aidonaia

Enter the ritual itself through a fifteen-day observance honoring Hekate Aidonaia as She gathers the Dead. Each five-day period focuses on a specific type of ghost, providing a structured approach to honoring the departed. This section includes step-by-step instructions so you can undertake the ritual in your own practice.

Part III: Ritual Preparations

Learn how to prepare the materials for the observance, including a ritual libation known as Witch Blood, as well as the accompanying oil and incense. Alongside the recipes, I explain the reasoning behind their formulation and the role these preparations play in the ritual.

Part IV: The Ritual of Hekate’s Night

Bring the observance to its culmination on November 16th. This section provides instructions for preparing the altar, consecrating the ritual space, and performing the main ritual. It also explores the significance of Hekate’s Night and the preceding days within the broader devotional practice.
